Daily Inspiration: Chosen by God

The God Who Chose You

Ephesians 1:4

For [God] chose us in Him before the creation of the world…

Thought for Today

God picked you to be a part of His family. He knew in advance all your weaknesses and failures, and He still chose you to be His son or daughter. Being a child of God is not based upon our decision to follow God and then earning His love. It is based upon His decision to create and love you, a decision He made at the dawning of creation. You are not a cosmic accident. You are chosen by God for a purpose and a passion. You are His child because He first loved you.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank you for choosing me to be your child even before the world was made. Let this thought fill me with joy no matter what this day holds for me. For I know that nothing can stop You from loving me. Amen.

Devotional Quote for Today

“God's purpose in the salvation of his people is invincible—it cannot fail—because it is based first not on our choosing God but on God's choosing us.” –John Piper

Nothing is impossible, the word itself says, “I’m possible!” –Audrey Hepburn

Daily Inspiration: Labor Day

Labor Day

Genesis 2:1-3
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.

Hebrews 4:9-10
So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.

Thought for Today

As American Christians the closest we come to experiencing God’s idea of Sabbath rest happens on Labor Day. We work hard to make sure that our work is at a reasonable stopping point and all our chores are done so that we can spend the day with family and friends. In creation, God finished all His work and then took a time of rest. What did that rest consist of? If you read on in Genesis 2 you will see it consisted of spending time with Adam and Eve. It was important because in the busyness of creation God had not been focused on them like He wanted to, so He created time to ensure they were a priority. This is what our weekly Sabbath rest should look like. We make time for God in the morning, because no matter how hard we have tried our busyness has not allowed us to be with Him like we desire. Then we are supposed to make time for family and friends to invest in and reinvigorate our most important relationships. Make today a true Sabbath. Spend a few extra minutes in prayer and in God’s Word this morning. Then, be reinvigorated by investing in your most important earthly relationships around the grill this afternoon. At the end of the day, pause and reflect on how you can make your weekly Sabbath rest a little more like Labor Day.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for modeling rest for me. I know I need it regularly, bless today with true rest and give me wisdom to make a day each week like this one. Amen.

Most of the things we need to be most fully alive never come in busyness. They grow in rest. ― Mark Buchanan

Daily Inspiration: Discipleship: Blessed to be a Blessing

Blessed to be a Blessing

Psalm 67:1-2

May God be gracious to us and bless us
and make his face to shine upon us, Selah
that your way may be known on earth,
your saving power among all nations.

Thought for Today

One of the reasons that God blesses His people is so that a relationship will Him would be desirable. The psalmist prays for blessing so that God would be known among the nations. Ours should be the same desire. For when God has taken care of the most overwhelming problems like sin and death, it kind of feels petty and ungrateful to ask for more blessings. However, while God in fact delights to bless His people with good things, it is His hope that these little daily blessings would both inspire us to tell others how amazing our God is and encourage them to desire a relationship with a God like that. What blessings can you celebrate today that might help someone else see how great it is to be a disciple of God?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for every good and perfect gift You have poured out on me. Help me to be grateful and share this good news in my life. Amen.
