Daily Inspiration: Blind Eyes 5

2 Corinthians 4:7

But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.

Thought for Today

Why does God use weak and broken vessels like you and me to communicate to the world the surpassing glory of the gospel of Jesus Christ? What we have been given is an amazing treasure. The gospel changes live, it straightens crooked family trees, and grants eternal life. Why would God trust something so precious to common people like us? Because no one will mistake the common vessel for the treasure. No one will credit the vessel for the value of the treasure. They will immediately look past the vessel and see the treasure. How long does it take a child to discard the wrapping paper on Christmas morning? Why don’t they spend more time appreciating the beautiful paper you spent so much time effort wrapping it with? Because the gift inside is what they want to see. So it should be with the gospel. God has spent a lot of time and effort to wrap His gospel in you. It took Him time and effort to make you see and understand the Good News so you could carry it inside you. Yet the wrapping is nothing compared to the wonder of the gift inside. We should rejoice that God uses people like you and me to carry His gift to the world. Because no one will confuse us with the gift God has for them. And we get to experience the joy of seeing them look quickly past us and discovering Jesus.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for entrusting me with the gift of the Good News about Your Son, Jesus. Help me to allow others to discover this gift in me and to rejoice when they move past me and into Your loving arms. Amen.

Devotional Quote

God's plan for enlarging His kingdom is so simple - one person telling another about the Savior. Yet we're busy and full of excuses. Just remember, someone's eternal destiny is at stake. The joy you'll have when you meet that person in heaven will far exceed any discomfort you felt in sharing the gospel. — Charles Stanley

Daily Inspiration: Blind Eyes 4

2 Corinthians 4:2

We have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God's word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God

Thought for Today

Paul was accused of being underhanded and deceitful by people who were openly lying about him. These people wanted gentle believers to follow the Jewish laws before they could claim the grace of Jesus for themselves. So, Paul writes to the Corinthians to reassure them that he had been completely honest with them. He neither exaggerated nor sugar-coated the truth. He spoke plainly and openly about God’s grace in Jesus Christ. So many churches today try to tailor the gospel to their audience. They withhold difficult parts, speak in half-truths and avoid offense at all costs. This is not to say that shouldn’t know our audience or speak winsomely. We absolutely should. Paul spoke very differently to the largely Jewish church in Ephesus than he did to the philosophers in Athens. However, he never watered down the truth. He never added to or took away from what God had said and done in Christ. We need to continue to wrestle with how to speak the truth of God in love to the people in our culture today. They need to know the Truth, the whole Truth and nothing but the Truth, so help us God.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, help me to honor Jesus with the words I speak about Him. Help me to speak the truth in every situation just as the people need to hear it. Amen.

Quote of the Day

If we do not know ourselves to be full of pride, ambition, lust, weakness, misery, and injustice, we are indeed blind. And if, knowing this, we do not desire deliverance, what can we say of a man...? ― Blaise Pascal, Pensées

Daily Inspiration: Blind Eyes 3

2 Corinthians 4:5-6

For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Thought for Today

This is a profound statement by the Apostle Paul. We need to be very careful about the message we are proclaiming. All too often in the history of the church the message has moved from the Lordship of Christ to the lordship of the church, particularly the lordship of those running the church. A message that puts anyone but Christ in charge is, and has always been, a huge turn-off to those who hear it. People know a power grab when they hear one. Paul tells us that we do have a critical message to share. In the midst of a blind world there is a light that breaks through and shines on our hearts. It is the message of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Think about it, we all know folks who are have turned a blind eye on organized religion, particular the church. They can articulate all the church’s faults from the crimes of the crusades to personal experiences with “church people.” However, I honestly don’t know anyone who despises Jesus. People love Jesus. He spoke about the need for more love and challenged spiritual and political bullies on behalf of the little guy. When you ask people about Jesus they gush with good things. Let’s stop trying the shine the light of the church on people and begin shining the light of Christ again. Let’s talk to them about someone they actually like who has made a bigger difference in their lives than they yet know! Jesus is the light that blind eyes are eager to see.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, help me learn to talk more about You with people who are spiritually blind. For You are the one who opens blind eyes with the light of Your gospel. Amen.
