Daily Inspiration: Mental Attack 4

Romans 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Thought for Today

We spend a lot of time thinking and talking about the first part of today’s verse, not being conformed to the thought patterns of the world but being transformed by the thoughts of God. However, the second half is just as important. How do we know what thoughts are from the world and which ones are from God? How do we know what God’s will is so we can follow it? Paul tells us we must learn to test what we think and hear. We need to bring it alongside what we know to be true of God and see if it measures up. God has given us all that we need in the combination of His Word, which tells us His thoughts, His Holy Spirit, Who helps us understand what God has said, and our brothers and sister of the Church, who confirm with Godly wisdom the things that are from God. These are give to us so we can test our thoughts. When we begin to “take every thought captive to obey Christ” (2 Cor 10:5), we can test them and hold onto the good that reveals God’s love, grace and will, and discard the bad and destructive thoughts and behaviors. We need to begin practicing this testing. What is a thought that has challenged or discouraged you lately? Take it to God. Seek guidance in His word (tools like Biblegateway.com can be wonderful helps to put in a key word and see what God says about it). Ask a mature Christian that you trust what they think. Trust the Holy Spirit to lead you into the truth. Finally, when you are convinced of the truth act on it. Do the next logical thing that this truth requires and see how God responds.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for giving me a process to test the things that the devil and the world try to sneak past my faith in You. Give me wisdom to discover what is good and true and discard everything else to You glory. Amen.

Devotional Quote

We are either in the process of resisting God's truth or in the process of being shaped and molded by his truth. — Charles Stanley

Quote of the Day

Religion, like science, is only noteworthy when it emphasizes a matter of what is true rather than whose belief is greater or lesser or which deity works for whom. ― Criss Jami

Daily Inspiration: Mental Attack 3

Romans 8:6-7

For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law

Thought for Today

Today’s little verse form Romans 8 can be a bit confusing. The bottom line is that the mind that is set on earthly things is actually hostile to the things of God. It fusses and fights over what it wants. It is focused on fleeting things that it thinks will satisfy its longings, but they never do. The mind that focuses on the Spirit brings life and peace. It maintains a long-term perspective that helps it to get through difficult times without losing hope. For it knows that the life to come will always be better than the life we currently live. So, focus your mind on God and the things you know will please Him and you will find life and peace.

Prayer

Lord God, help me to fix my mind of the things that truly matter and not on the things that are passing away. Let me find my peace in You. Amen.

Daily Inspiration: Mental Attack 2

Ephesians 6:12

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Thought for Today

We face many metal battles, depression, loneliness fear, and anxiety are rampant in our culture. We have all kinds of explanations for these conditions, and they aren’t without merit. However, we need to remember that our greatest adversaries are not socio-cultural in nature. They are spiritual. We have a spiritual enemy that loves to masquerade in earthly and explainable guises. He knows that if he can attack our minds and emotions that he can keep us oppressed and far from God. When we, or someone we love, are battling our thoughts we should go to God in prayer and intercede for them. Prayer and the Word of God are our weapons against the spiritual forces arrayed against the children of God and we shouldn’t be afraid to use them. Certainly, we should encourage people to seek other forms of help as appropriate, but prayer should be our first response, not our last resort. For ours is the Lord of Hosts, the God of angel armies that Who fights for us.

Prayer

Lord of Hosts, fight for me and those I love today who are battling under mental attack by the enemy. For You always win the battle. Amen.

Quote of the Day

It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived. — George S. Patton
