Daily Inspiration: Eyes Up 3

1 Peter 1:3-5

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Thought for Today

We talked earlier this week about storing up treasure in heaven, but the truth is that our greatest treasures are already in heaven. Because of the resurrection of Jesus, we already have a hope that is alive within us. It is the hope of the eternal life that is already ours in Christ Jesus. Because He died and rose for us we no longer have to fear death. It is the gateway to the inheritance that awaits us. In heaven we will receive the greatest gifts of God apart from His forgiveness and grace. In the life to come we will enter God’s presence and see Him face to face. We will hear Him praise us for our service to Him. He has a home for us in His kingdom that is already prepared; no maintenance needed. In heaven we will see all of our loved ones who went before us and stay with them forever. What treasure that we work for on earth can compare to these? Everything I really want it already waiting for me. Therefore, I focus my eyes on the Kingdom I desire as I journey through the one I currently live in.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I praise You for all of the incredible promises You make about the Kingdom to come. Help me keep my eyes up today as I live in gratitude for all these wondrous gifts. Amen.

Daily Inspiration: Eyes Up 2

Psalm 19:7-8

The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
 the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;

Thought for Today

  1. we look to the Lord we are drawn to the things He has said. David rejoiced in the law of the Lord. These may sound as strange to us as it did to the people in his day. The laws of man are often burdensome things. We have to be careful how we drive for fear an officer is right around the corner and because he has the authority of the law behind him we can be punished if we transgress the law. David discovered that the laws of the Lord do much more than threaten us for bad behavior. The law of the Lord opens His heart and reveals His character to us. The laws of the Lord say what they do because of who God is. His character is unchanging, and the law is an overt call to those created in His image to be like Him. We see the things that He loves and values reflected in the law. Why not speed in your car? Because the heart behind the law desires us to love our neighbors and seeding makes us a danger to the people we are supposed to love and care for. The more you think on God’s revealed law the more you will come to understand God. If you have time open your bible to Exodus 20 and read the Ten Commandments. Read them once just to get familiar with them again. Then read them a second time a ask yourself why God said each of them. This will lift your eyes up to the God who loves you enough to show you what a blessed life really looks like.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, help me to meditate on the beauty of Your law today that I may know how to honor my Heavenly Father in all I do today. Amen.

Devotional Quote

Neither the Ten Commandments nor the great commandment is revelatory if separated from the divine covenant with Israel or from the presence of the Kingdom of God in the Christ. These commandments were meant and should be taken as interpretations of a new reality, not as orders directed against the old reality. They are descriptions and not laws. ― Paul Tillich, Systematic Theology

Quote of the Day

The Ten Commandments have never been replaced as the moral basis upon which society rests. — Edwin Louis Cole

Daily Inspiration: Eyes Up 1

Matthew 6:19-21

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Thought for Today

Where are the eyes of your heart focused? Most people have their focus on earthly things. They pay close attention to their bank accounts, job security, possibility of promotion, family needs, and much more. There is so much to occupy our attention here that we begin to think all the most important things are of this earth. Jesus called His hearers to something higher. He told them that the reason they were so focused on earthly things was because that was where they were investing their time, energy, and hearts. Yet all the things of this earth are fleeting. They can be stolen or simply succumb to the ravages of time. Instead, we need to begin investing more time, energy, and heart into the eternal things of God’s kingdom. For the time you spend in worship and prayer are never wasted and their impact is unfading. The people you share the Good News of Jesus with who hear and believe will be with you for eternity. The world and the devil love the distractions of the temporary things of this world. Fix your mind and heart on the eternal things of God’s kingdom and you will have treasure in heaven that will draw your daily focus there.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, shift the focus of my mind and heart today to see the opportunities You present to invest in eternal things. Amen.

Devotional Quote

The greatest cause in the world is joyfully rescuing people from hell, meeting their earthly needs, making them glad in God, and doing it with a kind, serious pleasure that makes Christ look like the Treasure he is. ― John Piper, Don't Waste Your Life
