God’s Surgical Instruments: The Church

Isaiah 30:20-21

[The Church exists so that] we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity…so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,

Thought for Today

The third instrument the Holy Spirit uses to help correct our spiritual vision is the church. In the church we help each other grow. We hold each other accountable for spiritual progress. We lift each other up when the circumstances of life overwhelm us. The Holy Spirit works through our relationships with one another to help us see the truth and become more like Christ. As you gather with your brothers and sisters in Christ this weekend, praise God the Holy Spirit for the relationships He has brought into your life that have supported you. Then ask Him who He wants you to come along side and help them grow to maturity.

Prayer

Spirit of Truth, thank You for all of the people you have brought into my life through Your church who have blessed my on my journey through life. Help me be open to the people You can use me to bless. Amen.

Devotional Quote

The church exists primarily for two closely correlated purposes: to worship God and to work for his kingdom in the world ... The church also exists for a third purpose, which serves the other two: to encourage one another, to build one another up in faith, to pray with and for one another, to learn from one another and teach one another, and to set one another examples to follow, challenges to take up, and urgent tasks to perform. This is all part of what is known loosely as fellowship. ― N.T. Wright, Simply Christian: Why Christianity Makes Sense

Daily Inspiration: Eye Surgery 4-Prayer

God’s Surgical Instruments: Prayer

James 1:5

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

Thought for Today

The second instrument God uses to correct our spiritual sight is prayer. Through prayer we allow the Holy Spirit access to the lenses of our heart. There He can diagnose the lies we have believed, the unhealthy attitudes we have cultivated, and the behaviors that all falsely inform the way we see the world and the people around us. These things are often hidden to us. We don’t generally analyze the way we see other people. We just assume our opinions are right and normal. However, the Holy Spirit is the revealer of truth. As He begins to correct your spiritual vision you will start to see the truth. He will also remind you of what Jesus said, like, “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” As your sight becomes clear you will begin to realize that the people you don’t like are people Jesus passionately loves. He will show you how to respond to them in a way that reshapes how you see the world and God’s amazing grace within it. Prayer is also intended to go hand in glove with your time in God’s Word. The Holy Spirit uses these two instruments together to speak to you and show you the truth. Pray about the things He shows you in your Bible reading. These are the things He is longing to talk with you about. It is okay, in this process, to feel a bit like you are wrestling with Him. After all, it is difficult to have your world view adjusted. Just keep pushing through. He will hang in there with you until you come to a knowledge of the truth.

Prayer

Dear Holy Spirit, help me to open my heart to You, learn to listen to Your voice as You speak to me through God’s Word, and help me clearly see what is true, rather than what I want to be true. Amen.

Devotional Quote

If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair. ― C.S. Lewis

Daily Inspiration: Eye Surgery 3-The Word

God’s Surgical Instruments: The Word

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Thought for Today

In order to correct our spiritual vision the Holy Spirit uses some specific instruments. The first is the Word of God. The Scriptures are not a set of static documents that exist simply for our information. In the hands of our master surgeon, the Holy Spirit, they come alive. They speak to our present circumstances. They declare to us the words of the Lord that define what is good and true. Most importantly, like a scalpel, they cut through all our pretenses and discern the thoughts and intentions of our heart. Through the Word God speaks the truth to us, challenges us, and reforms us. When you allow the Holy Spirit to engage your life through the Word of God He will reshape your spiritual vision, so you begin to see more clearly. Take up His Word today and allow the Holy Spirit to speak through it. (Don’t know where to start? Try Colossians 3:1-17. Read it at least twice and listen for what God is saying to you through it.)

Prayer

Holy Spirit, speak to me through God’s Word. Correct the attitudes and inclinations of my heart that keep me from truly seeing what You desire to show me. Amen.

We must allow the Word of God to confront us, to disturb our security, to undermine our complacency and to overthrow our patterns of thought and behavior. ― John Stott

Quote of the Day

The soul can do without everything except the word of God, without which none at all of its wants are provided for. ― Martin Luther, On Christian Liberty
