DAILY INSPIRATION: JOSHUA, PART 5

Thank you for taking a few important moments to be inspired and grow in your walk with Christ. May these moments take you one step closer to hearing Jesus say to you, "Well done, Good and Faithful Servant."

There, in the presence of the people of Israel, he wrote on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he had written. And all Israel. . . stood on opposite sides ... half of them in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded at the first, to bless the people of Israel. And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the Book of the Law. --Joshua 8:32 ESV

Thought for Today

Joshua and the people of Israel had just scored a major victory at the city of Ai. They had previously been defeated by its inhabitants, due to the unfaithfulness of Achan. Having avenged this defeat, Joshua takes an important step. He gathers all the people on either side of a great valley, so they all can hear them, and reads the Law of God to them. Before they ventured forth, Joshua needed to be sure they understood that their victory was from the Lord, not their military genius or prowess. This is a critical lesson for us, too. Our God is a God who rejoices to give His children victory. He overcomes the challenges in our path. However, He wants us to remember that He has given us the blueprint for victory in every battle in His Word. He calls us to obedience because the path to victory lies in the things He has called us to do. The Law calls us to trust in God and not our own strength. It is often counter-intuitive when we face a trial to turn to God and not fight in our own strength, but each time God wins the victory we learn to trust Him more. So if you are facing a particularly difficult challenge today, go back to basics. What does God call you to do? Be humble? Love your enemy? Be still and let Him be God? It might not seem like a good idea at the time, but turning the battle over to God is always a winning formula.

Prayer

O Lord, my Champion, I know that no challenge is too great for You to overcome, and I acknowledge that many are too great for me. Help me to turn to You and be obedient to Your calling in the moment, knowing that my victory is in You. Amen.

Devotional Quote

I think that is a better thing than thanksgiving: thanks-living. How is this to be done? By a general cheerfulness of manner, by an obedience to the command of Him by whose mercy we live, by a perpetual, constant delighting of ourselves in the Lord, and by a submission of our desires to His will. --Charles Spurgeon

Rebellion against tyrants is obedience to God. --Benjamin Franklin

DAILY INSPIRATION: JOSHUA, PART 4

Thank you for taking a few important moments to be inspired and grow in your walk with Christ. May these moments take you one step closer to hearing Jesus say to you, "Well done, Good and Faithful Servant."

[Joshua said,] “And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” --Joshua 24:15 ESV

Thought for Today

It is the nature of the human heart to wander. At the end of his time of leadership, Joshua called together the people of Israel and reminded them of how good the LORD had been to them. Then he called them out for allowing their hearts to wander to other gods. Having reminded them of the LORD’s goodness he then does something surprising, he gives them the option to follow God or not. Joshua does not demand that they follow the LORD, but rather, takes the bold stand of telling them that no matter what they decide his family will remain faithful to the LORD. This is great leadership! When you coerce people into following the LORD it always ends poorly. If they choose to follow it always ends in blessing. This weekend you have a lot of options. How will you choose to serve the LORD with your family?

Prayer

Lord God, You have always been good to my family. You have blessed us with good times and carried us through trials. I choose to follow You. You are my God. Amen.

DAILY INSPIRATION: JOSHUA, PART 3

Thank you for taking a few important moments to be inspired and grow in your walk with Christ. May these moments take you one step closer to hearing Jesus say to you, "Well done, Good and Faithful Servant."

Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” --Joshua 5:13-14

Thought for Today

Joshua is looking up at the great walls around the city of Jericho. The wall is so thick that homes are built inside them. According to one ancient source three chariots could race side-by-side across the top. As he considers the impossibility of conquering the city, an angel appears. Joshua’s question is the one I would have asked. “Whose side are you on, mine or theirs?” The angels answer stunning: “Neither. I am on God’s side.” With this statement the angel turns the question around asking, “Joshua, whose side are you on, your own or Gods?” So often in life I ask God to be on my side rather than making sure that I am on His side. When I do that I act as if I am in charge and God needs to get in line with my plans. We need to seek God’s plan and make sure that we are aligned with Him. If we do we will always be on the victorious side! I am certain that Joshua’s plans to conquer Jericho did not involve a daily parade around the city. However, as many armies had already discovered, Jericho would never fall to a human plan. Where in your life have you been asking God to be on your side? How will you go about turning that around and ensuring you are on God’s side?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help see the places where I have been demanding that you get in line with my plans and give me the wisdom to get in line with Yours, instead. Amen.
