DAILY INSPIRATION: LESSONS FROM THE BOOK OF JUDGES, THE CYCLE OF REBELLION

Thank you for taking a few important moments to be inspired and grow in your walk with Christ. May these moments take you one step closer to hearing Jesus say to you, "Well done, Good and Faithful Servant."

After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel. Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord and served the Baals. They forsook the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods of the peoples around them. --Judges 2:10-12

Thought for Today

It has often been said that Christianity is only one generation away from extinction. What is frightening is that it will not be a single rebellious generation that walks away from the Lord. History shows us that it is the cancer of small compromises that causes the next generation to think that the Lord is unimportant. This is the first phase in the cycle of sin that plays out twelve times in the Book of Judges. The people slowly walk away from God one compromising baby step at a time until they come to the place where they don’t really know Him anymore. I believe that we, as a nation, are experiencing this today. Gradually declining church attendance, prayer removed from school, small social compromises in the name of fairness and tolerance, and many other small steps away from God are causing the next generation to think that God is unimportant. And they don’t have time for what is unimportant. What compromises have you allowed into your life or the life of your family? How can you begin to uphold the importance of the Lord in your family again? It is always easiest to cure the cancer if it is caught early.

Prayer

Holy Lord, I confess that I have begun to compromise on small issues in my life rather than standing strong for You. Help me to see these compromises and take steps to eliminate them, that I may be more faithful to You. Amen

DAILY INSPIRATION: REFORMATION WEEK: DEVOTIONS BY MARTIN LUTHER, MONDAY

Thank you for taking a few important moments to be inspired and grow in your walk with Christ. May these moments take you one step closer to hearing Jesus say to you, "Well done, Good and Faithful Servant."

The devotions for this week are adapted from John Theodore Mueller’s delightful, Five Minutes Daily with Luther (MacMillan, 1926)

For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. --Galatians 3:26 ESV

Luther’s Thought for Today

Paul, as a true and excellent teacher of faith, always says these words, “by faith, in faith, of faith,” which is in Christ Jesus. He does not say, “You are the children of God because you have heard the Law and have done the works thereof,” but ”by faith in Jesus Christ.” The Law does not make us children of God, much less the traditions of men. The Law does not produce in us a new nature, a new birth; but it sets before us the old birth by which we were born into the kingdom of the devil, and thus prepares us for a new birth, which is by faith in Christ, and not by the Law. This is done by faith alone. Faith in Christ makes us the children of God. What tongue, either of men or angels, can sufficiently praise and magnify the great mercy of God towards us, that we, though we are miserable sinners and by nature children of wrath, should be called to His grace and glory to be made the children and heirs of God and lords over heaven and earth, and all of this only through our faith in Jesus Christ!

Prayer

Lord God, I think you for the gift of faith by which I have received all of the blessings of being Your child. Help me to live in the joy of this truth today. Amen.

Devotional Quote

Faith is a living, daring confidence in God's grace, so sure and certain that a man could stake his life on it a thousand times. --Martin Luther

Quote of the Day

The Protestant Reformation had a lot to do with the printing press, where Martin Luther's theses were reproduced about 250,000 times, and so you had widespread dissemination of ideas that hadn't circulated in the mainstream before. --Nate Silver

DAILY INSPIRATION: JOSHUA, PART 5

Thank you for taking a few important moments to be inspired and grow in your walk with Christ. May these moments take you one step closer to hearing Jesus say to you, "Well done, Good and Faithful Servant."

There, in the presence of the people of Israel, he wrote on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he had written. And all Israel. . . stood on opposite sides ... half of them in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded at the first, to bless the people of Israel. And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the Book of the Law. --Joshua 8:32 ESV

Thought for Today

Joshua and the people of Israel had just scored a major victory at the city of Ai. They had previously been defeated by its inhabitants, due to the unfaithfulness of Achan. Having avenged this defeat, Joshua takes an important step. He gathers all the people on either side of a great valley, so they all can hear them, and reads the Law of God to them. Before they ventured forth, Joshua needed to be sure they understood that their victory was from the Lord, not their military genius or prowess. This is a critical lesson for us, too. Our God is a God who rejoices to give His children victory. He overcomes the challenges in our path. However, He wants us to remember that He has given us the blueprint for victory in every battle in His Word. He calls us to obedience because the path to victory lies in the things He has called us to do. The Law calls us to trust in God and not our own strength. It is often counter-intuitive when we face a trial to turn to God and not fight in our own strength, but each time God wins the victory we learn to trust Him more. So if you are facing a particularly difficult challenge today, go back to basics. What does God call you to do? Be humble? Love your enemy? Be still and let Him be God? It might not seem like a good idea at the time, but turning the battle over to God is always a winning formula.

Prayer

O Lord, my Champion, I know that no challenge is too great for You to overcome, and I acknowledge that many are too great for me. Help me to turn to You and be obedient to Your calling in the moment, knowing that my victory is in You. Amen.

Devotional Quote

I think that is a better thing than thanksgiving: thanks-living. How is this to be done? By a general cheerfulness of manner, by an obedience to the command of Him by whose mercy we live, by a perpetual, constant delighting of ourselves in the Lord, and by a submission of our desires to His will. --Charles Spurgeon

Quote of the Day

Rebellion against tyrants is obedience to God. --Benjamin Franklin
