Is Jesus Really God? Authority

Matthew 9:2-8

And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.” And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.” But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic—“Rise, pick up your bed and go home.” 7 And he rose and went home. When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

John 5:25-27

“Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.

John 5:18

This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

Thought for Today

Jesus is God because He claimed and demonstrated authority that only belongs to God. In the famous account of the paralytic lowered through the roof to be healed by Jesus, the friends of the paralytic are hoping that Jesus heals his body. Jesus’ first reaction upon looking at the man is to forgive his sins (heal his soul). Jesus’ opponents immediately realize that Jesus has just claimed to have the authority to forgive sins, which God alone can do. In order to demonstrate that He did indeed have the authority over sin He heals the man’s body as well. Everyone there made the connection between the claim of authority, the act of healing and the inference that Jesus was not merely mortal. The passage ends with them struggling to get their heads around it. In the second passage, Jesus claimed the authority to judge the people of the world on the Last Day. Scripture clearly teaches that only God can judge a person with regard to eternal things. Yet Jesus claimed to have this authority as well. And, lest you think that maybe Christians are stretching the importance of these claims, the final verse tells us what Jesus’ contemporaries thought of His claims and what they thought they should do about it. They took Jesus claims of authority pretty seriously. If Jesus truly has the authority to forgive sins and judge people on the Last Day He must be God. It is what His hearers thought He was saying.

Lord Jesus, I thank You for the authority You have over sin and for using it in my life. I am confident it You are my judge on the Last Day. Amen.

Is Jesus Really God? The Signs

John 10:31- 33, 37-39

The Jews picked up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me?” The Jews answered him. . . “If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” Again they sought to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands.

Thought for Today

One of the primary reasons to believe that Jesus really is God is because Jesus did things that only God can do. The accounts of Jesus life are filled with miracles. He healed the sick, even those with leprosy for which there was no cure. He commanded the wind and the waves and they obeyed Him. Jesus cast out many demons and feed thousands of people with a few loaves of bread. These are not things that mere mortals can do. The skeptic will say that those things were added in later by His disciples to try to make Jesus out to be more than He was. However, Jesus’ miracles stand up to every reasonable historic litmus test. If I told you that John F. Kennedy died in a plane crash, how could you know whether it was true or not? Maybe there was a grand conspiracy that caused all the history books to claim he was shot. You could ask someone who was alive when it happened. They would know the truth. The same is true for the miracles of Jesus. After Jesus’ ascension His disciples went around Israel claiming that Jesus had done many miraculous things. The people they were speaking to would know people who had been in Galilee or Jerusalem when the miracles were taking place. If they had not happened the disciples would have been laughed at. Also, Jesus opponents make no effort to discredit His miracles. They would certainly have pointed out that Jesus was a charlatan if the miracles were untrue. His miracles are irrefutable facts of history. Jesus says even if you don’t believe in Him because of what He said, believe because He did things that only God can do.

Lord Jesus, I praise You for Your miracles that give me greater confidence that You are God who left heaven to rescue me. Amen.

Devotional Quote

Only Jesus has prophecies made hundreds of years in advance made literally true. Only He did miracles; only His immediate followers claimed He died and rose from the dead, so in comparison, He comes out superior to other great religious leaders. — Norman Geisler

A number of years ago, Peter W. Stoner and Robert C. Newman wrote a book entitled Science Speaks. The book was based on the science of probability and vouched for by the American Scientific Affiliation. It set out the odds of any one man in all of history fulfilling even only eight of the 60 major prophecies (and 270 ramifications) fulfilled by the life of Christ.

The probability that Jesus of Nazareth could have fulfilled even eight such prophecies would be only 1 in 1017. That's 1 in 100, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000.

Stoner claims that that many silver dollars would be enough to cover the face of the entire state of Texas two feet deep. Now I've been to Texas. I've driven for days to get across Texas. Texas is a very big state. Who in his right mind would suppose that a blindfolded man, heading out of Dallas by foot in any direction, would be able, on his very first attempt, to pick up one specifically marked silver dollar out of 100, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000?

Is Jesus Really God?

John 8:57-59

So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

Thought for Today

The most important consideration in tackling the question of whether Jesus really is God or not is whether Jesus ever claimed to be God. It ultimately doesn’t matter what you or I think if Jesus never asserted that he was God. Our passage for today is a verbal confrontation between Jesus and the teachers of the Law. Jesus claimed to know what Abraham thought about the day he would come. They wanted to know how Jesus could possibly know what Abraham thought since Abraham was long since dead. To their sarcastic question Jesus makes an astounding claim, “Before Abraham was, I AM…” Jesus claimed to have been in existence before Abraham was ever born. He also invokes the divine name (YHWH—I AM) and applies it to himself. His opponents clearly understood that Jesus was claiming to be God, for “they picked up stones to throw at him.” This was the proper punishment for blasphemy. Therefore, the first clue that Jesus is truly God is that he claimed to be God. You cannot ignore this statement. You have to come to grips with the reality that Jesus was either crazy, making him totally untrustworthy, or exactly who he claimed to be. If Jesus had not made this claim all other deliberations would be an exercise in speculation. However, since he did claim to be God, what evidence can we find to support his assertion?

Holy Spirit, thank You for sharing these words from Jesus with me. Help me to be open to the evidence that supports Jesus’ claim that I may more confidently trust in Him. Amen.
