Psalm 91:9-10

If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
and you make the Most High your dwelling,
no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent.

Thought for Today

In the psalms God continually invites us to find our rest, hope, comfort, salvation and refuge in Him. God wants us to know that He is there for us at all times and in Him is everything we need. So how do we go about finding what we need in God? By putting our trust in Him. Our first response to a crisis like this is to put our trust in ourselves and the agencies we feel are trying to keep us safe. It is not bad to have a plan, take all the necessary precautions you can and listen to those in authority. This is exactly what we should be doing. However, if this is the foundation of your hope for enduring in these difficult times you will soon find that hope eroding. Things are going to get worse before they get better. Someone you know will get sick. The media will continue to produce sensational and frightening reports while telling us to stay calm. Our hope needs to be planted in something solid that will endure these trials without wavering. Only in the Lord do we find such a place. God’s promises are sure and His mercies are new every morning. Great is His faithfulness towards us. While doing all we know to do, we need to be intentionally drawing nearer to Him. Come regularly to His Word. In it you will find refuge from your fears. Talk to Him in prayer and you will experience His Spirit move to calm, comfort, and guide you through these difficult days. Worship wherever you can, for this brings you into His very presence and gives you joy. God is our sure foundation in times of trouble. He is our refuge. Only His hand can truly save us. As you put your response plan into action this week, consider add these things to the habits you are seeking to engrain. Wash your hands. Read your Bible. Pray fervently. Keep your social distance. Worship like no one is watching. Then you will discover a firm foundation in this time of trouble.

Heavenly Father, I have always heard that You are my firm foundation and refuge in times of trouble. Now that those times are actually upon me, help me to stand firmly on You, my Rock and my Fortress. As I put my faith into practice, help me to discover Your love and protection more deeply. Amen.
