Psalm 91:14-16

“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
He will call on me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

Thought for Today

Psalm 91 saves the best for last. These are powerful and comforting words from the Lord. You must be sure to read them properly though. It is easy to read them transactionally. Thinking, because I love God He must rescue me. Because I acknowledge His name God must protect me. Rather, these are relational statements. God says, because I have a love relationship with you I will rescue you. Because we have a relationship where you honor Him and call upon Him, out of that same relationship, He declares His love for you. That love will be displayed in powerful ways, rescue, protection, His presence in trouble, deliverance, long life, and salvation. God doesn’t do these things because He must. Like you rubbed His lamp and now you get three wishes. He does them because He delights in the relationship He has with you. He wants you to know Him more fully and trust Him more deeply. He wants to show you His goodness, because that is the high calling of love. In these trying times, it can be easy to think that God has abandoned us, or that He doesn’t care. Quite the contrary, He often allows times like these because in them we more fully experience the depth of His love for us. When times are good, and life is easy, God’s love gets lost in our comfort. When times are hard His love shines through like a beacon of light and we remember how awesome He really is. So, read those verses again and thank God for His great love and care throughout this past week. Then, build your relationship with Him in worship this weekend.

Lord God, Your love astounds me. All of Your promises are freely given to those in relationship to You. Help me to find joy and peace in these challenging days by cultivating my relationship with You. Amen.
